Rituals Sakura Scrub - Organic Rice & Cherry Blossom

Having never tried anything from Rituals before, I was excited to receive their Sakura Scrub from a friend. This one is in the scent 'Organic Rice & Cherry Blossom,' and  it is beautiful. I am tempted to never use another body scrub again. This is like nothing I have ever used before as it buffs away impurities and dead skin, leaving my skin luxuriously soft. That scent - inviting and relaxing without being overwhelming so a the perfect accompaniment to a long hot or soak in bath to help you unwind. Rituals have found the perfect balance of a cleanser and an exfoliator. The sugar grains are enriched in a lightweight oil which hydrates my dry skin.  My dry scalp is the bane of my beauty routine and admittedly, this stuff, although not directed to do so, removed the majority the flaking skin around my hairline. The first time I saw the results of this I had a eureka moment - something which rarely happened with my medicated shampoos. Your skin will thank you for this in the winter months.
Rituals Sakura Scrub - Organic Rice & Cherry Blossom
RRP: £19.50/$30.49 for 375ml - it is pricey but I am immediately in love with this product and for results like mine, I am shamelessly admit that it is worth it. You can also rest in the knowledge that Rituals put a big emphasis on their ingredients being organic, so you really are paying for a tub of natural Japanese goodness. Goodbye money, hello gorgeous skin.

The Body Shop Christmas 2014 Collection

The cosmetics brand synonymous for being cruelty free has recently released their new Christmas collection for 2014. 'Tis the season for scents including Frosted Cranberry, Glazed Apple and Vanilla Brulee from The Body Shop. Products include shower gel, body butter (my personal favorite and latest obsession), hand cream, lip balm, fragrance oil, soap, room spray, shimmer lotion, eau de toilette, reed diffuser, bath jelly, body polish, bath sprinkles, lip gloss and body sparkler. These special ediotns will have you covered whichever you choose to indulge in.  The new scents of body butter are also available as a festive trio (£12 for three 50ml tubs) should you not be able to choose from each delicious Christmas inspired scent.
This year I opted for the body butter and body sparkler in the scent Frosted Cranberry with the hopes of being gifted a lip balm and body butter in Glazed Apple from either my husband or my parents. Thanks in advance mum.

Body Butter - Frosted Cranberry
The Body Shop says:
This fruity Body Butter is a vibrant and juicy-smelling festive favorite for fragrant, soft skin. It contains Community Fair Trade shea butter.
  • Leaves skin feeling softer and smoother
  • Buttery texture
  • Seasonal Frosted Cranberry scent
I say:

Rich and creamy so not unlike any other body butter I have tried from The Body Shop, except this time I smell like Christmas Eve personified. This is exceptionally hydrating for dry skin as it leaves the skin feeling moisturized for the remainder of the working day. The sharp scent lingers for a few hours, leaving you smelling like you have just stepped out of the shower.

The Sparkler - Frosted Cranberry

Frosted Cranberry fragrance with subtle pink sparkle
Outshine the party lights this Christmas! Spritz skin and hair with a fine dusting of lovely rose-tinted, scented sparkles for an illuminating shimmer.
  • Iridescent shimmer
  • Infused with Frosted Cranberry scent
  • Boudoir-beautiful atomiser

I say:
Just in time for all the ladies ditching the fake tan who are in search for the perfect glowing product that will see them over the winter months.Excellent for you if you want an extra hint of sparkle for any upcoming Christmas parties. The atomiser perfectly controls this shimmering product as you spray onto any areas were you want to look as radiant as the angel above your Christmas tree. I recommend arms, legs décolletage - and if you are extra careful you can use this minimally on tops of cheeks as a face highlight. I imagine this will work beautifully as an eyeshadow, particularly as an inner corner highlight to a cranberry smokey eye or perhaps as a centre highlight if you opt for a halo effect. For the perfect illumination, spritz The Sparkler after applying your body butter so that it will cling to the skin all night - not just in texture but also in scent.
The Sparkler - Frosted Cranberry

These are great stocking fillers or you could opt for treat boxes (£7) or larger treasure tins (£17) making for pretty gifts for your loved ones.

Weleda Wild Rose Day & Night Creams

Living with dry and sensitive skin for years has made me extra cautious of which products/ingredients I use. I once read in one of those old lady women's magazines (the ones with stories you'd only ever witness on Eastenders - both of which I love) that anything infused with rose is meant to hydrate the skin as well as reduce redness and increase elasticity. I immediately bought the Una Brennan Superfacialist Rose Intense Moisture Mask and the Weleda Wild Rose Day Cream and Night Cream. Both brands use organic products, a quality which I openly welcome into my skincare regimen.
Weleda Wilde Rose Day & Night Creams.
I have used both creams over the course of a year, interchanging my skin care routine between these and the Superdrug Vitamin E range but I always find myself gravitating back to these.
Weleda Wilde Rose Day & Night Creams.
Firstly, rose is one of my favourite scents. I love anything rose-scented including candles, incense, essential oils and of course cosmetics. Even the word 'rose' resonates tranquillity with images of a cottage garden. When I apply these wild rose lotions on to my face, I almost feel my skin drinking up the water from nature's bilateral flower.
Weleda Wilde Rose Day & Night Creams - ingredients.
The day cream claims to "preserve the skin's youthful vitality," whereas the night cream "rejuvenates and replenishes." I am not a skin expert so I can't explain the science behind the claims but I can say they work for me. These are my holy grail skin care products.

Weleda Wilde Rose Day & Night Creams - out of their boxes.
For me, the day cream sits well under make-up preventing foundation soaking into my skin. The night cream rehydrates my skin and when I wake up the next morning my skin feels refreshed and looks dewy. My skin no longer feels tight or dry with these little 30ml miracles.
My skin sans make-up and after applying the Weleda Wild Rose night cream.
Currently, my routine consists of the Cien Lotus & Silk milk cleanser (£2.99 from Lidl) before applying Boots Traditional Skincare Glycerin & Rosewater toner and moisturiser (£2.99 from Boots) and then using wither the Weleda Wild Rose day or night cream. This combination really seems to work for my sensitive skin. You only need a pea-sized amount in order to cover your entire face as both creams are incredibly rich and emollient. A little really does go a long way so make sure you use every single millilitre of these tubes. I certainly did.
Weleda Wilde Rose Day & Night Creams  - dead to the world.
Available from Boots for £12.50 each, (exclusively online) Weleda for £15.95 each and CVS for $28.50. Prices do vary though bear in mind that Boots usually have online 3 for 2 offers. The price for me is expensive considering you only get 30ml per tube. It may be travel friendly but you don't get much product. However, when I consider other factors such as how little I need per application and how lovely my skin looks and feels, it is definitely worth it. I also weigh that up with other rose-infused products from luxury brands which have the exact same ingredients yet an extortionate price tag and I realise that it is a good deal.

So, if you have sensitive and dry skin like me (with occasional combination), these Weleda creams may be what you need to achieve truly soft skin which smells like a country park.

Balance Active Formula Snake Venom Eye Cream & Wrinkle Freeze Serum

Due to extensive investigative scientific processes, it has been proven that rattlesnake venom has anti-coagulant properties. From this, researchers gathered that the venom could potentially prevent and treat strokes including reversing the side-effects of a stroke. The venom has subsequently been developed into drugs known as Ancrod and Viprinex which are yet to be pharmaceutically approved and be made available to patients worldwide.

A recent study has shown the effects of a new painkiller in the pharmaceutical market to be more powerful than morphine. The painkiller has been discovered by French scientists who have carried out extensive research on the African Black Mamba snake. This snake produces analgesic proteins known as mambalgins. These proteins were tested on mice and the results demonstrated painkilling without the side effects that come with taking morphine. This research is still very much in the early stages but imagine the possibilities if this painkiller was suitable for human consumption. It could potentially be introduced as part of the palliative care for service users going through drug rehabilitation or chemotherapy. (Gallagher 2012).
Not a pretty sight but can radically alter modern medicine and even inspire current beauty regimes.

Sounds incredible doesn't it? That snake venom can have qualities that can both take and improve life. It comes as no surprise that beauty manufacturers realised that the idea of snake venom's ability to freeze the face (effectively making you look younger), would appeal to the masses. But whilst we're waiting for the FDA and and the EMA to approve such scientific advances with the real deal, we beauty lovers what will have to settle for a manufactured ingredient known as Syn-ake, nicknamed 'botox in a bottle.' Sounds like an expensive treatment designed for the rich and famous, right? Well actually, an inexpensive version is available for me, you and your 70 year old neighbour hoping to look like a younger Jessica Lange. These are from Balance Active Formula, a brand that I have seen in discount stores which offer good quality skin care products for just a fraction of high-street prices. Of course, like many expensive predecessor treatments, the active ingredient is the Syn-ake peptide, which has the ability to freeze muscles, just like real snake venom could.
Balance Active Formula Snake Venom Eye Cream & Wrinkle-Freeze Serum.
Admittedly, I only picked up these up because of the 'Snake Venom' label. The first of the the Syn-ake duo is an eye cream which claims to do the following:
  • Relax tired eyes.
  • Moiituries and illuminate.
  • Minimise dark under eye circles and bags.
I once read in a beauty magazine that putting under eye cream on at night defeats the purpose of how it works (something about the cream dragging the area down blah-de-blah), so instead I use eye creams, including this one,  every second morning. I wouldn't say that my eyes feel relaxed, but they do feel as if little diced up cucumbers have been placed there, giving a cooling effect to the eyes. I do believe that all eye creams are  essentially re-labelled moisturisers and so this cream does a good job of keeping the eye area hydrated. I cannot comment on whether it reduces dark circles and bags as I do not particulary suffer from these complaints - I don't even need to wear concealer most days - long may that continue - tangent. In summary, I like it as it makes my delicate little eye sockets feel refreshed and more awake.
Rejevenating eye cream.
The second product is a wrinkle-freeze serum claiming to be a needle-free way to reduce fine lines and wrinkles. As part of my personal skin care routine, I like using serums twice a week after moisturising for added nourishment. This particular one feels drier than my usual serum and feels almost like it is tightening my skin upon application. I don't think I have produced enough wrinkles in my 27 years to warrant a wrinkle-freeze serum so I haven't noticed a difference in my skin's appearance at all. Perhaps it may be beneficial for the more mature ladies (and gents) to try this one out if they have creped skin.
Tightening skin serum.
Below is a price comparison of brands that offer similar products.
Rodial Glamoxy Snake Serum (25ml) -  £130.
Nip + Fab Viper Venom Face (40ml)  & Eye (15ml) duo set - £24.95.
Transformulas Wrinkle Block Line Restriction Creme (15ml) - £35.

What I do love about this particular Balance Active Formula Syn-ake duo is the price tag. I got mine from Home Bargains which cost £1.89 for the 15ml eye cream and £2.99 for the 30ml facial serum. If Home Bargains is not accessible to you, try Amazon where prices start at £5 per product. You can't argue with those prices, especially when testing out new products.
