Urban Decay Alice Through The Looking Glass Review + 5 Looks

Urban Decay Alice Through The Looking Glass Review + 5 Looks
Urban Decay has yet again collaborated with Disney in order to release another Alice In Wonderland fantasy themed eyeshadow palette. It is a sequel which comes six years after the release of the original Alice book of shadows and the imaginative Tim Burton film, Alice In Wonderland.
Urban Decay Alice Through The Looking Glass Review + 5 Looks
No doubt, the Alice in Wonderland palette was an iconic product at the time of creation. It was however a palette with no original shades, just shadows which already existed and renamed to fit the Disney theme. Quite frankly, I have mixed feelings on the sequel palette, Alice Through The Looking Glass. I love everything about Urban Decay and part of me loves this palette because it's Disney, and ah, hello... it's make-up! Despite the palette making it into my July favourites, I have had more playtime with it and I am a little disheartened with the pay-off from some of the shades. I feel that Urban Decay didn't try as hard to create an excellent quality product as they usually do. Cora from Vintage Or Tacky plainly states that when companies do these collaborations which involve copyrighted and trademarked materials, a huge portion of the budget will go towards the merchandising and packaging, subsequently impacting upon product quality in a negative manner.

I really had no intention in buying it as I wasn't that interested with the original but then my Gran gave me money for graduating from university and I went into town with the sole intention of buying a magnificent, expensive eyeshadow palette. And here we are!  So even if I don't get much use out of it (because, let's be honest, I have several limited edition Urban Decay palettes just sitting prettily for display purposes), my beautiful Gran bought me it and I will always associate it with her.

Firstly, the packaging is beautiful, albeit unnecessarily large. The outer packaging displays the eyeshadows in columns according to characters of the film where you can create inspired looks. They are Alice (Looking Glass, Reflection, Dormouse, Metamorphosis), Mad Hatter (Hatter, Gone Mad, Paradox, Cake), Mirana (Lily, Duchess, Kingdom, Chessboard), Iracebeth (Heads Will Roll, Bandersnatch, Salazen Grum, Royal Flush), and Time (Time, Dream On, Chronosphere, Mirror).  Of course, you can mix and match the shades depending on the look you wish to create.

The palette itself is a splendid kaleidoscopic display of colours, flowers and butterflies, designed in such a way that captures the atmosphere of the film. The added details of the Alice In Wonderland quotes and the hidden doors and drawers are a kitsch addition for avid make-up collectors, who, like myself, also love this particular Disney franchise. Flip open the lid and there is a gold framed mirror with the inscription, "We're all mad here."  Just below the mirror are double doors with the quote, "I'm not strange, weird, off, nor crazy. My reality is just different from yours." When you open these doors, a blue butterfly springs up - a superfluous element that could have been executed better. The base of the palette contains a drawer which pulls out entirely, separating it from the remaining packaging - a quality that many reviewers have requested since many previous similarly designed limited edition palettes did not have this feature - and Urban Decay obliged. The drawer quotes, "I knew who I was when I got up this morning but I must have changed several times since then." Peculiar and aesthetically pleasing details like this make for an exceptional collector's item.

The palette contains twenty new shades, but overall, the shadows are hit and miss. Out of the twenty I truly love twelve of them and this is for colour alone, not for pigmentation. Out of those twelve, two are poorly pigmented and one moved around so much it was creasing within five minutes despite being primed with a greasepaint (FYI, I prime my lids with either cream shadows or greasepaint and rarely experience such creasing as I did on this occasion). The palette also comes with a double-ended brush - one end for packing on colour and one for blending. The brush is a little splayed but a good addition to an expensive palette.
Urban Decay Alice Through The Looking Glass Review + 5 Looks
Looking Glass - pale pink demi-matte. Good highlight shade.
Hatter - vibrant lime green with green micro-shimmer. Performs more as a matte when applied to the skin. Poor pigmentation. Difficult to blend.
Lily - shimmering pearl with pale pink duochrome. Great pigmentation. A favourite shade of mine, particularly for an inner corner highlight.
Heads Will Roll - tiffany blue with gold micro-shimmer. Good pigmentation. Pack the colour on and blend with the colour still on the brush to get it to work evenly.
Time - shimmering black-navy. Great pigmentation.
Reflection - matte pale peach. Good pigmentation. Great as a transition shade. One of my favourites.
Gone Mad -  aubergine with red micro-shimmer. Performs more as a matte when applied to the skin. Poor pigmentation. Difficult to blend.
Duchess - shimmering pink-orange duochrome. Great pigmentation. Especially beautiful as a contrasting inner corner highlight when paired with the cooler shades. A favourite.
Bandersnatchmatte deep  ocean blue. Good pigmentation. Difficult to blend.
Dream On - silver-lilac glitter. Poor pigmentation which is a shame as it is one of my favourite colours. The only way I got it to work was by applying a cream eyeshadow underneath Mirror and applying Dream On wet to get the duochrome and glitter to show up on the lids.
Dormouse - warm rusted mid-tone brown with gold micro-shimmer. Great pigmentation. Great to deepen the crease. Performs as a matte when applied to the skin. One of my favourites.
Kingdom - shimmering copper-bronze. Great pigmentation. One of my favourites.
Paradox - traffic cone orange with gold shimmer. Great pigmentation.
Salazen Grum - shimmering crimson. Creased after a few minutes of wear. One of my favourites despite the creasing.
Chronosphere - shimmering bronze. Great pigmentation. One of my favourites.
Metamorphosis - vibrant shimmering blue, a cross between blue ribbon and true periwinkle. Good pigmentation.
Cake - cool magenta pink with silver shimmer. Poor pigmentation. Difficult to blend out.
Chessboard - matte warm cinnamon brown. Great pigmentation. One of my favourites.
Royal Flush - shimmering pale ivory. Great pigmentation.  Perfect highlight shade for inner corners and brows.
Mirror - shimmering taupe. Great pigmentation. One of my favourites.

The Alice Through The Looking Glass palette retails for £43 on Urban Decay UK and $60 on Urban Decay US. The palette contains 0.8oz of product and when converted gives each shadow a little over 2g.

Despite some quality inconsistencies in the eyeshadows, I do adore this palette and  I have it  proudly displayed as it has sentimental value and that is something which cannot be reviewed! You should absolutely pick this up for the Disney theme if your are a make-up collector.

For make-up inspiration when using this palette, check out the video I created, 5 Looks, 1 Palette.

Day to Night Make Up with Urban Decay Naked On The Run + Review

Day to Night Make Up with Urban Decay Naked On The Run + Review
Once touted as limited edition last December, it looks like the Urban Decay Naked On The Run palette is here to stay.

I received this beautifully packaged palette as a Christmas gift but have not reached for it as much as I thought I would have.
Day to Night Make Up with Urban Decay Naked On The Run + Review

As it was so neglected I thought I would do a day to night look without deviating too much from the palette itself. At the time of filming this, my day looks were considerably paired down than usual so this make-up is a reflection on what I was enjoying back then. I definitely think the day look could be improved as could the evening make-up. While we on the subject of time, make-up for me has no boundaries and so I might decide to wear what is typically regarded as suitable for the day time at night and vice versa.

Also a rare treat is in this blog post - I only edited one picture so all others are raw images except for the video thumbnail. And, oops, I didn't take any images of the day look, probably because it was so basic it didn't need to be shown in detail.
Day to Night Make Up with Urban Decay Naked On The Run + Review

So what do I think of this palette? Firstly, I cherish it because it is a gift but aside from that I feel like Urban Decay are churning out palettes under the guise of the iconic Naked collection because it appeals to the masses. Yes, I am one of those sheep because I cannot help myself. However, for the price, I think Urban Decay could have done a little better eye-shadow wise. Perhaps something a little darker would have made this palette much more appealing. That being said, for what you get either this palette, it is good value for money as individual items cost much more when you total them up.

In the palette you get six eyeshadows, one of which can be doubled up as a highlighter shade.

Dive is a sparkly, mid-tone frosted rose copper with micro glitter. Like with other shimmers in this palette, there was fallout so make sure to do your eyes first before you even contemplate doing foundation or concealer.

Fix is a light to mid-tone neutral matte brown and blends well. Great pigmentation.

Resist is a mid-tone metallic taupe with a metallic sheen. The shimmer in it makes fallout a pain but it is a beautiful, highly pigmented shade.

Dare is a mid-tone warm matte brown and blends well. Great pigmentation.
Stun is a gorgeous warm golden brown with warm with micro glitter. Highly pigmented but that fallout thought...

50/50 is a pale iridescent champagne shade with warm undertones and a pearly sheen. Better used as a subtle highlight rather than as an eyeshadow.

The palette also includes a bronzer and blusher which are more suited for light to medium skin tones. The bronzer is a warm medium matte shade and not as pigmented as other bronzers from Urban Decay. The blusher is a cool bright pink which suits my undertone perfectly as it mimics my natural flush colour.
Day to Night Make Up with Urban Decay Naked On The Run + Review
Naked On The Run has three compartments consisting of Urban Decay products which help to complete a make-up look. Sesso is a full sized lipgloss and can replaced with any other Naked gloss in a shade of your choice once you run out (of course you have to go and actually buy it). Sesso a sheer, warm, medium brownish pink and is comfortable to wear on the lips.  Topping up is a chore as it only lasts a few hours and even less so if you are eating or drinking.
Day to Night Make Up with Urban Decay Naked On The Run + Review
The next compartment is filled with travel sized 24/7 glide-on pencil in the shade Stag. It is a is a cool, deep brown with a soft satin finish. It blends easily although you have to work quickly with it before it sets. It is well pigmented and builds to an even, dense colour. It may not be bulletproof but it wears really well on the lash line just not as great in the waterline. Urban Decay typically release miniature versions of their pencils as gift sets so finding another similar size pencil in a different colour won't be a difficult task.
Day to Night Make Up with Urban Decay Naked On The Run + Review
The final compartment contains a travel sized Perversion mascara and I am in love with it. So much so that I purchased the full sized version and strangely, the travel sized one is better. I don't know if I got one from a weird batch but I prefer the mini one. It makes my lashes look thick and voluminous without being too clumpy. I normally prefer dry mascaras but lately I have been gravitating towards wet ones, much like the formula of Perversion. It is incredibly black, although not quite as black as my Lorac pro mascara. A little of this mascara goes a long way so ease up on the coats unless you are wanting to achieve that Tammy Faye look.

Make-Up Forever Flash Palette DUPE Tutorial & Review | Color Block Make-Up

Make-Up Forever Flash Palette DUPE Tutorial | Color Block Make-Up
An entire make-up application done by mixing the colors from the MUFE flash palette dupe. It is called the 'IMagic Fashion 12 in 1 Flash Color Cosmetic Case Make-Up palette for eyes and cheeks' and cost me just £7.15 (has since increased) from eBay - a huge 90% less than the MUFE original which can cost anywhere between £70 and £95. This is such a great palette for nights out and events where you want extra heavy coverage in your foundation. it is also ideal for make-up artists, theatre actors, drag queens and also for those who travel alot and don't mind mixing their colors to get what they need. They are highly pigmented greasepaints which are easy to blend in order to customize your own colors. They gave great coverage but because of the texture I would suggest setting the make-up with a either translucent or similar colored powder if you decide to wear this as an everyday make-up as the product has a tendency to transfer especially on the eyelids. I have spoken so much about this palette that I thought I would show you how to do an entire face of make-up using just this palette.  This was such a fun video to do. Hope you enjoy.
The colors in this palette are:
  • Gold (shimmer)
  • Coral
  • Turquoise
  • Fuchsia
  • Yellow
  • Brown
  • Silver (shimmer)
  • White
  • Red
  • Bright Blue
  • Leaf Green
  • Black
Make-Up Forever Flash Palette DUPE Tutorial | Color Block Make-Up
Make-Up Forever Flash Palette DUPE Tutorial | Color Block Make-Up
For this make-up I mixed some of these colors together using a stainless steel mixing tray and spatula that I bought from eBay for just £2.73.

Face:
  • Foundation - I mixed White, Brown, Coral (although I kept calling it peach in the video) and Leaf Green) to create a flesh tone.
  • Concealer - Same colors as the foundation with an extra bit of White.
  • Highlight - Same as the foundation but with alot more white. I then mixed Gold and White for the added shimmer on the tops of the cheeks.
  • Contour - Same colors as the foundation but with extra Brown.
  • Blusher - I mixed Coral, Red and Pink for a nice spring/summer blush color.
Eyes:
  • Eyebrows - I mixed a small bit of Brown with Black and White to make a taupe shade.
  • Eyelid Base - I used the leftover foundation as my eye base.
  • Eyeliner - I mixed Pink and Bright Blue to create a vibrant indigo/violet shade. I then set this with a similar colored eyeshadow which was Saturn's Ring from the Celestial palette by Sleek.
  • Lower Lash Line & Bottom Waterline - I mixed Yellow and Leaf Green to make a lime green/chartreuse shade and set it with Thrash from the Electric palette from Urban Decay.
  • Inner Corners - A mixture of White and Gold.
  • Mascara - I used two mascaras which were Make-Up Revolution's The Viper and Maybelline Big Eyes.
Lips:
  • Main Color - Same as blusher color with an extra bit of Coral.
  • Centre Highlight - Same my initial highlight shade before using the Gold.
