Heroin chic was a popular and much desired aesthetic of the fashion and beauty industries of the mid 1990s.
Although it has similarities to a grunge look, it is not as 'pretty' as in it does not typically have red lips and sallow eyes the way grunge did. Heroin chic is defined by pale skin and dark under eye circles. It is more angular than grunge, making contouring a necessity for this look.

This look is further characterised by emaciated and androgynous features and was a counter-culture reaction to the full-figured and healthier looking models and actresses at the time such as Pamela Anderson, Cindy Crawford and Claudia Schiffer. This overly criticised fashion trend reflected unhealthy lifestyles including malnourishment and drug addiction.

Pure heroin had become more widely available and users were no longer just the poor and vulnerable of society. Middle class people began to abuse the drug and smoking it became the preffered method. The relaease of films in the 1990s such as Pulp Fiction and Trainspotting glamorising drug addiction, something which conincided with the emerging heroin look trend.
